Chapter Excellence Awards Winners Announced at ALC

The ASTD Chapter Excellence Awards were introduced to recognize chapters that have achieved excellence in three key areas in 2006. Congratulations to the following recipients of the 2007 awards:

CORE Survey—Chapter contacts needed

This year, the process for completing the Chapter Operating Requirements (CORE) survey is more streamlined due to an upgrade in our surveying tools. One assigned contact person from each chapter will be sent a unique url to access their personalized survey.  For chapters that did not designate a chapter contact for the CORE survey at ALC, please email your chapter coach with the information.

Employee Learning Week (ELW) Toolkit Mailed

A toolkit about ELW was sent to chapter presidents and marketing/communications contacts last week. Also posted online, the toolkit includes a press release template, information about how to request proclamations, and new tips for submitting an op-ed piece to the local media. Click here to access the ELW Toolkit. Keep in mind there are less than 30 days left to plan for ELW, December 3-7! All chapters are eligible to receive the ASTD “Champion of Learning” certificate if they recognize ELW through any kind of activity, event/meeting, or communication to members. Chapter leaders can email elw@astd.org with questions or to explain how they recognized ELW locally.

ASTD Public Policy Update—Labor-HHS appropriations bills passed

Congressional appropriators expected to pass their first major domestic appropriations bill during the week of November 5th. The spending bill (H.R.3043) funds the Fiscal Year 2008 budgets for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, as well as some independent agencies.

For workplace learning and performance professionals, watch for funding for federal job training and adult education programs under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). The bill includes a rescission of $245 million in funds allocated to states in previous budget years for adult, dislocated worker, and youth training services. The fate of the bill is uncertain, as President Bush has vowed to veto the legislation in its current form because it exceeds his budget request. Congressional appropriators were seeking to counter the veto threat by combining the bill with politically popular appropriations for veteran’s affairs and military construction, but this attempt may not succeed in the Senate.
