CORE Corner

4th and Goal for CORE
With the fourth quarter of 2009 here, it’s time to set yourself up to reach your goal of achieving 100 percent CORE (Chapter Operating Requirements). Remember your chapter coach is a great resource but is only as helpful as the information you provide. Below are some actionable suggestions to help you:

  • Assess your report from last year and identify any gaps.
  • Contact your chapter coach with any CORE-related questions.
  • Send your chapter’s designated CORE contact information to your chapter coaches.

A new CORE workbook to assist you in completing the CORE survey (due January 31, 2010) will be available at the ASTD Chapter Leaders Conference and on the CORE webpage. Be sure to attend the CORE session at ALC on October 30 at 3 p.m.

The personalized CORE survey url will be emailed to the designated chapter CORE contact in early November.

Additional Staff Review of CORE Submissions Planned for 2010
ASTD chapter services will be adding a step in the staff’s CORE submission review process in 2010. Staff will be reviewing the chapter membership rosters submitted with the CORE report to calculate the joint membership percentage so that we can more closely track this important metric.

Tools for Chapter Success

New Tool for Chapter Collaboration!
Chapters benefit when they work together and learn from each other, which is why national ASTD created a new tool for chapter leaders—the Chapter Collaboration Portal, found at www.collaborate.astd.org. The portal will allow you to:

  • Share best practices, including sample tools and documents
  • Upload and download documents in different categories such as: technology, professional development, board resources, membership, communication, and national resources
  • Search for board members of other chapters by leadership position, chapter, or name.

To login to the Chapter Collaboration Portal and use this dynamic tool, all board members must have a single sign-on profile setup and be coded as a “chapter leader” in ASTD’s database. If you do not yet have an astd.org profile, go to www.astd.org to register and create your profile, username, and password. Click here for a job aid on how to create a single sign-on profile on www.astd.org. If you are having problems accessing the site, please contact your chapter coach to ensure that you have been identified by your chapter as a current chapter leader.

Toolkits for Employee Learning Week are Now Online
Employee Learning Week is December 7-11, but now is the time to start planning what your chapter can do to highlight the value of learning during this time. There are some great resources online for you to use, including graphics for electronic and print use, toolkits for planning your event(s), proclamation toolkits, and examples of what other Champions of Learning did the past couple of years. Remember, when you participate in Employee Learning Week your chapter will receive official recognition from ASTD and will be featured as a Champion of Learning on the Employee Learning Week website.  For more information and to access your toolkit, go to www.employeelearningweek.org. There will be an Employee Learning week webcast on October 13, and a session at ALC if you want even more information.

This brochure highlights the benefits national ASTD provides to its members, please Click here to view. Distribute this brochure at chapter meetings and post to your chapter website to promote national ASTD membership. This can also be used as a recruiting tool to assist the chapter in reaching its goals for the Chapter Joint Membership Challenge. For additional membership resources available to your chapter, visit the “Power of 2” website or contact your chapter coach.

Chapter Joint Membership Challenge
Fall is here! What better way to finish off the year than with a Fall Membership Drive? The “Value of ASTD National Membership” flyer and the “National Member Benefits for Chapter Members” marketing tools are a great tools to get this started. Not only could this help your chapter with joint membership but it could also pay for incoming board members’ national ASTD membership. All chapters should have received a message informing them of their individual goals for the challenge. If your chapter has not received this message please contact your chapter coach.

CHAPTER LEADER ALUMNI – This Group’s for YOU!
Are you getting ready to transition off your chapter board and willing to stay on a contact list for additional volunteer opportunities, or provide advice if ASTD chapter services or current chapter leaders need to call on your expertise and experience? If so, please join the new ASTD Chapter Leaders Alumni Group. ASTD chapter services and the National Advisors for Chapters (NAC) will use this group as an ongoing resource to support chapters. If you have a LinkedIn profile, search for the “ASTD Chapter Leaders Alumni Group” to join. If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile yet, Click here for a job aid on how to set one up.

Collaborate on Tony Bingham’s New Book!
Following up on his keynote speech at the 2009 ASTD International Conference & Exposition, ASTD President and CEO Tony Bingham is working on a book with long-time workplace educator and business writer Marcia Conner about social media and learning. Tony is inviting members to collaborate on this project by sending their stories and ideas for case studies to a special email address set up for this purpose. Email your ideas or background about your organization’s use of social media in learning to press@astd.org. Be sure to include contact information so the writers can get in touch with you for more details.

Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Reauthorization Update
One of ASTD’s public policy initiatives is to advocate for the reauthorization of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), the landmark legislation originally passed in 1998 to streamline and coordinate workforce training programs at the federal level. While WIA reauthorization has been on the Congressional agenda several times in recent years, it has not passed. However, in this session of Congress, both committees in the House and the Senate are working on this legislation and have held public hearings in recent months. More information from the committees’ hearings may be found here: http://help.senate.gov/Hearings/2009_07_16/2009_07_16.html or http://edlabor.house.gov/hearings/labor/competitive-workforce/.

In addition to WIA reauthorization, ASTD is following specific training bills. Of the more than 300 pieces of legislation introduced in this session of Congress that include training, ASTD is tracking specific legislation of interest to members and the workforce development community. Check the legislative tracking chart on the public policy page of ASTD’s website for up-to-date information.

CORE Corner

BUILD YOUR CORE: Non-ChAMP chapters that would like assistance with increasing their joint membership may send updated rosters to your chapter coach and national ASTD will send national membership invitations to your members who are not yet taking advantage of the “Power of 2” special discounted rate for chapter members.

Chapter Leaders – To meet the Chapter Operating Requirements (CORE), you must be a joint chapter and national member. Chapter leaders qualify for a special $119 discounted national member rate (save $50 off the regular joint member rate). Click here for the membership form.

Chapter Membership Stars and Superstars Announcement
In 2008, about 75 percent of ASTD chapters met or were above the CORE requirement of 30 percent joint membership. The CORE membership goal helps establish that members of the national organization and its chapters are part of the same organization with shared valuable resources and a shared compelling mission that effectively meets members’ professional development needs. ASTD would like to recognize those chapters that went above and beyond the 30 percent requirement; these chapters are our membership STAR and SUPERSTAR chapters. For a listing of these chapters please click here.

Special recognition goes to the Mid-New Jersey chapter, which achieved 91 percent joint membership within their chapter. This is a remarkable achievement and shows their commitment to informing members of the benefits of both national ASTD and its local chapters. The Mid-NJ Chapter received one complimentary registration to the ASTD Chapter Leaders Conference (ALC). Congratulations to the chapter—be sure to attend ALC to learn how they did it!

Chapter Joint Membership Challenge
ASTD is challenging itself and ALL chapters to increase the number of joint members!  Encourage ASTD national members to join chapters and local chapter members to join ASTD national. Build a partnership between national ASTD and local chapters to inform members of the benefits of the “Power of 2.” Chapters that have been working on a plan to increase joint membership and have already invested resources this year will be recognized and rewarded.

The challenge is for chapters to increase the number of joint members in their chapter by one of the following criteria:

Challenge 3 percent (minimum 5 members) 6 percent (minimum 10 members) 9 percent (minimum 15 members)
Prize One (1) free national ASTD membership Two (2) free national ASTD memberships Three (3) free national ASTD memberships

The increase in joint membership will be calculated using the chapter’s December 31, 2008, membership numbers compared to December 31, 2009, membership numbers (submitted with the CORE report by January 31, 2010). Each chapter will receive an email informing them of their starting number and how many members it takes to reach each level. If you have any questions about this membership challenge please contact your chapter coach.

Currently, the ASTD Certification Institute does not pre-certify any programs but if your chapter’s event is centered on one of the areas of expertise defined in the ASTD Competency Model then the event will be evaluated to receive recertification credit. Chapters are encouraged to use the description below for those learning events the chapter believes align with the ASTD Competency Model. Contact your chapter coach if you have any questions and be sure to look at the CPLP toolkit for other ways to promote certification.

“Participants may earn up to 1 CPLP recertification point for attending this program, provided this program is approved by the ASTD Certification Institute. Check the CPLP Candidate Bulletin on the ASTD website for further information about acceptable credits for CPLP recertification.”
