Conference Details

Conference Website: www.astd.org/alc
Conference Theme: The ASTD 2011 Chapter Leaders Conference theme is "The Connected Leader." You are encouraged to consider this theme as part of the context of the session content, should your proposal be selected. When writing the session title and description, please ensure that the topic focus area is clear and concise. Incorporating the theme into the session title and description is NOT encouraged in your 2011 RFP, as feedback indicates that doing so clouds the clarity of the actual session learning objectives.
Conference Objective: ALC provides chapter leaders with a strategic and concentrated opportunity to learn how to be more effective in their respective chapter leadership roles. ALC provides opportunities for chapter leaders to partner with other volunteer leaders and national ASTD staff members to grow the profession and shape successful ASTD chapters.
Additional objectives:
- Provide chapter management tools and best practices for chapter leaders that can be implemented immediately.
- Recognize contributions of volunteer leaders in the workplace learning and performance profession, local chapters, and ASTD.
- Inform chapter leaders of national ASTD’s strategic initiatives and resources.
- Highlight collaboration opportunities between and among local chapters as well as with national ASTD.
Conference Attendee Profile: Each year, conference participants are a mix of seasoned industry professionals and those new to the profession. Many ALC participants have been chapter leaders for several years and have participated in a number of past ASTD conferences, while others are new to their chapter leader role and are participating in ALC for the first time in 2011. Session content should factor in this broad range of experience.
Submitting Your Proposal
Key Guidelines
Session Facilitator Benefits and Resources: Session facilitators are extended complimentary conference registration (a $195 value). In the case of co-facilitators, a maximum of one co-facilitator may also receive complimentary conference registration. Facilitators are acknowledged in the program guide and ALC website. Potential facilitators are encouraged to register and participate in a webcast led by the selection committee on April 13 for tips on submitting a quality proposal.
Session Length: Most sessions will be allotted 120 minutes, however a small handful of proposals selected by the committee will be slotted for a 45-minute session block, where the topic or content is better aligned for a shorter timeframe. Please indicate within your submission if you believe your topic is best suited for one of the shorter sessions.
Session Objectives: The objective is to share a best practice from your role as a chapter leader. Describe a specific initiative, tool or process—something concrete that the participants will take with them and directly apply in their own chapter. Discuss what worked well and the lessons learned while implementing the objective. This is your opportunity to share some helpful hints with your chapter leader peers.
Session Facilitation: Each session must reflect facilitation skills that model the profession at the highest level. Providing opportunities for participant interaction and engagement are non-negotiable. Proposals that appear to be presentations or lectures will not be selected to be part of the conference agenda offerings. *As a rule of thumb, consider that 50% or less session time should be allotted for facilitator-to-learner interaction (ie. presentation/slides) while 50% or more session time should be allotted for learner-to-learner or learner-to-facilitator, interaction.
Session Tracks: The conference sessions will be identified by tracks based on common focus areas of the proposals selected. Please note in your submission form which focus area(s) your proposal most closely aligns.

Learning Objectives: Strong behavioral learning objectives should easily reveal the value of participating in the session. By using action verbs to describe the value delivered within your session, participants should be able to easily discern if the content will meet their specific leadership development need(s).
