The ASTD Chapter Leaders Conference (ALC) is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for ASTD chapter leaders to network and learn best practices for running their chapters. All current chapter leaders are invited to join us for this annual event!

Sivasailam “Thiagi” Thiagarajan, Ph.D. – “Advice to Chapter Leaders from an Oxymoron”
“Thiagi” is a performance consultant who makes a living by having fun and helping other people have fun. He has worked in three different countries and consulted in 25 others. Having started his consulting business 30 years ago in his basement, Thiagi’s company now designs leadership, soft-skills, and technical training for corporate clients with the goal of helping people achieve more through performance-based training that is motivating and effective.

Tony Bingham, ASTD President and CEO
Tony is the co-author of Presenting Learning released in April 2007. Through stories and case studies, he and co-author Tony Jeary offer powerful lessons to help learning professionals articulate the business case for learning more persuasively, position themselves as a strategic partner, and communicate a compelling story about the impact of learning on business results.Together with the Board of Directors and supported by a staff of more than 100 and a wide volunteer network, Tony is focused on helping members lead talent management in their organizations, build their business skills, understand the profession’s role in narrowing skills gaps, and connect their work to the strategic priorities of business. With broad-based business, financial, operational, and technical management expertise, Tony joined ASTD in 2001 as the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Information Officer. He became President and CEO in February 2004.

Jim Smith, Jr. – “Time to Reset”
Jim “Mr. Energy” Smith, Jr. works with thousands to provide breakthroughs to superior results in the areas of leadership, trainer, presentation and facilitation skills, customer service, and inclusion. His workshops and speeches have taken him to 42 states and six countries. An adjunct faculty member for the Rutgers Executive MBA Program, Jim was recently featured on the cover of the National Speaker’s Association magazine, Speaker. He formed JIMPACT Enterprises after having worked for the Bob Pike Group, Simmons Associates, CoreStates Bank, the Vanguard Group, and Prudential. All attendees are encouraged to register beginning July 15, 2009. Registration will be available to any last-minute attendees on-site.

Preconference will be held on Thursday, October 39, 2009. Since space is limited, early registration is suggested. This year will feature a hands-on workshop from 1:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. The preconference speaker and topic information will be listed online by mid-August.

Take advantage of the chapter incentive! When four members from your chapter register for the full conference (October 30-31), the fifth member attends for free!

All ALC sessions and activities will take place in the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Arlington, Virginia.

Q. What is ALC?
A. The ASTD Chapter Leaders Conference (ALC) is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for ASTD chapter leaders to network and learn best practices for running their chapters.

Q. What is the objective of ALC?
A. The objective of ALC is to provide chapter leaders with a strategic opportunity to learn how to be more effective during their tenure as chapter leaders. This is a chance for chapter leaders to network with volunteer leaders and ASTD staff, grow the profession, and learn what it takes to be more successful in their leadership roles.

Q. Who should attend ALC?
A. New chapter leaders for 2009 are encouraged to participate as well as veteran chapter leaders who may be in a new role next year. Many chapters send multiple leaders so that they can attend different sessions and share the information. ASTD members considering a chapter leadership position are also encouraged to attend. Approximately 400 chapter leaders are expected at the 2009 conference.

Q. When and where will ALC 2009 be held?
A. ALC 2009 will be held October 30 & 31, 2009. Preconference will be held on October 29, 2009. All conference activities will be held at the Marriott Crystal Gateway, 1700 Jefferson Davis Highway, Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia.
