The Chapter Incentive Program (ChIP) is a revenue-sharing program that offers chapters an opportunity to earn additional revenue. Through ChIP, chapters can earn thousands of dollars from new business they generate for ASTD programs and services. Each chapter is assigned a ChIP code. Every person that uses the source code when making an online purchase on the ASTD Store will be contributing to your chapter's financial health, further enabling you to accomplish your chapter's mission.

Earning ChIP revenue for the CPLP Learning System

Chapters receive $50 ChIP credit for each Learning System sold through the ASTD Store when purchasers enter the chapter code. The ASTD Learning System is the complete, self-directed learning resource for individuals preparing for the knowledge-based exam section of the CPLP™.

Q: How do I find my chapter's ChIP source code?
A: See the Online Chapter Directory. Chapter ChIP source codes look like this: CH1234.

Q: What products and services apply?
A:

* ChIP revenue only applies to membershipsand e-memberships $169 and above. Discounted board memberships, group, student, and senior memberships are not eligible for ChIP revenue.

** ChIP revenue does not apply to certificate registrations for chapters participating in the Certificate Partnership Program.

*** Publications can be ASTD Press books and Infolines only, ordered through the online bookstore, through ASTD Customer Care, or at ASTD Leaders Conference (ALC). ChIP revenue is not offered at the ASTD International Conference and Exposition bookstore or the TechKnowledge Conference bookstore.

**** ChIP revenue applies to both in-person and virtual conference registration. 

Q: Are chapters required to participate in ChIP?
A: No. Like many ASTD resources for chapters, this program was created based on feedback from chapter leaders. Individual chapters decide their level of participation in this program.

Q: How will this be tracked?
A: ASTD uses an association management software package to report revenue and commissions earned for each ChIP source code. ASTD runs quarterly reports that show revenue associated with each chapter code. A percentage of that revenue will be calculated based on the revenue share amount for specific products. The commission amount earned will then be sent to each chapter by check. For privacy reasons, chapters will not be sent purchase records of individual members.

Q: How can I use my chapter’s ChIP code to make a purchase on the ASTD online store?
A: Begin by selecting the items you want to purchase and placing them in your shopping cart. Once you are ready to check out, enter your chapter’s ChIP code where it says “ChIP/Global Network Code” on the Shopping Cart screen.

Q: How is the revenue share sent to chapters?
A: ASTD will send quarterly checks to chapters. Commissions earned from ASTD International Conference & Exposition registrations will be paid the quarter following the conference.

Q: If someone forgets to use our chapter’s ChIP code when registering for a conference or making a purchase, can our chapter still earn ChIP credit?
A: Unfortunately, this program is unable apply retroactive commission credit. However, if someone tried to use your chapter’s code and was unable to for some reason, we will work with them. Please contact your chapter coach for details.

Q: Do people have to be national ASTD or chapter members in order to use our chapter’s ChIP code?
A: No. Anyone, members and nonmembers, can use your chapter’s ChIP source code.

Q: If a person uses our chapter’s ChIP source code to register for an ASTD conference or buy something, will they get a discount?
A: Using the chapter source code will not trigger any special discount. However, there are so many existing discounts, special offers, early bird registrations, etc., that many people using the chapter source code will benefit from those. This program is an incentive for chapters. Another aspect is that chapters may find creative ways to reward/thank their own  member, such as with a special event, leadership development, etc.

Q: Regarding the ASTD International Conference & Exposition; how does ChIP affect the Chapter Delegation program of previous years?
A: Before, chapters had to assemble groups of people before realizing any benefit. Now, chapters don't have to assemble a group before they can benefit from promoting the conference. This program is also much easier for the chapter to administer because they don't have to keep track of their group.

Through the Chapter Incentive Program, your chapter can earn 10% (up to $80) for every person who uses your chapter’s ChIP code when registering for the ASTD International Conference & Exposition. Please don't confuse this program with the group rates offered to corporations, government groups, and international groups.

Q: In regards to ASTD conferences, can our chapter earn ChIP credit for any conference registrations, or just the International Conference & Exposition?
A: Chapters can earn ChIP credit for TechKnowledge® conference registrations and International Conference & Exposition registrations.

Q: Can chapter leaders get a list of people who purchase an item with the chapter source code?
A: No. ASTD does not release customer purchase information for confidentiality reasons.

Q: What benefits do individuals receive by using the chapter code?
A: They benefit by helping their chapter be more successful. Chapters are an important part of ASTD and the profession as a whole. Chapters are nonprofit organizations that strengthen their communities, help people build skills, find jobs, etc. For now, at least, individuals will be benefiting from the existing array of discounts, rather than one triggered from this code specifically. As the program develops, chapter leaders may think of individual incentives that work for their members.

Q: Why do some brochures and promotions from ASTD come with a source code already printed on it? Can my chapter members cross that out and write our chapter’s ChIP code there?
A: Yes. ASTD has a variety of ads and promotions with a variety of source codes. Chapter source codes are one of many that help ASTD understand what outreach programs are working, how well, where people are coming from, etc.
 
The point of the chapter ChIP source codes is to give chapters credit for promotion that CHAPTERS do to their members and prospects. ASTD is willing to share revenue that can be attributed to chapter efforts, but can’t stop using other source codes for other purposes.
 
Nevertheless, no matter what code is pre-printed on a brochure, chapter members can write their chapter’s ChIP code, and the chapter will be credited for participating products. Chapters know their local markets, people, companies, and communities, so they can tailor messages appropriate to member needs. In many cases chapters won't have to tailor anything at all. For the International Conference, ASTD provided web buttons and banners, sample press release, and other items that chapters could use with their source code.

Q: What if a member uses the chapter code to join National ASTD at a discounted rate?
A: ChIP revenue only applies to memberships $169 and above. Discounted board memberships, student, and senior memberships are not eligible for ChIP revenue.

Q: Are ChIP commissions taxable?
A: ChIP commissions are not taxable (federal or state). Chapters with more than $25K in gross receipts that are completing Form 990EZ should indicate the ChIP commission amount in Line 8 as “other revenue” with a brief description, such as “commissions from national ASTD.” Chapters with less than $25k in gross receipts that are completing Form 990N don’t need to report the ChIP commissions.
