The State of the Industry Report is ASTD’s definitive review of workplace learning and development trends. This annual report includes organization benchmarking data from ASTD BEST Awards Winners,G500 Companies, and other organizations from 2002 to date. ASTD estimates that U.S. organizations spent $1228 per learner on employee learning and development in 2010. Nearly two-thirds was spent on the internal learning function, such as staff salaries and internal development costs. The 2010 ASTD State of the Industry Report

ASTD estimates that U.S. organizations spent $125.88 billion on employee learning and development in 2009. This amount reflects direct learning expenditures such as the learning function's staff salaries, administrative learning costs, and non-salary delivery costs (including outsourced activities). Nearly two-thirds of the U.S. total ($78.6 billion) was spent on the internal learning function, such as staff salaries and internal development costs. The remainder ($47.3 billion) was allocated to external services such as workshops, vendors and external events.
