ASTD Rights & Permissions

Terms of Use for ASTD Published and © Copyrighted Material

Content published by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) is generally owned by ASTD. This is signified through the use of the © Copyright symbol followed by whoever owns the copyright. Copyright ownership does not have to show the © Copyright to denote ownership, ownership is inferred.  If content has been published by ASTD, we are not the copyright owner, you can assume ASTD owns the right to grant permission for other people or groups to use and/or adapt the content.

The standard compliance under copyright laws is that any content published by ASTD may not be reproduced, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, including photocopying, recording, or other electronic or mechanical methods without the prior written permission of ASTD.  The exception is in the case of brief quotations (no longer than 250 words) embodied in critical reviews and certain other noncommercial uses permitted by copyright law.

Terms of Use for CD-ROM/Downloadable Materials from ASTD Book Titles

If you are a purchaser of the Trainer’s WorkShop Series books, you may modify or otherwise customize the slides and other materials in the purchased book by opening and editing them in the appropriate application. However, all uses must denote the original source of the material—presenting this content as your own work is a breach of copyright law. You may indicate that a document was adapted from the purchased book and copyrighted by ASTD. The proper form for this identification is:

“Adapted from materials found in Trainers Workshop book title [fill in complete title of the Book] published by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD Press), 20XX [fill in year of publication located on the book's masthead page]. All rights reserved.”

For all other ASTD CD-ROM or downloadable materials, except as expressly provided above, no part of the materials may be reproduced, included in a manual or publication, distributed in any form or by any means, or stored in a database or retrieval system, or posted to any Website or intranet without prior written permission.  To receive permission to use these materials, please contact the Copyright Clearance Center
