Question
I am new to contracting my services and I think I am setting my rate too low. How can I discover what the market rate is for my area, so I can set my rate accordingly?and Developing the fee structure is the most difficult part of consulting. Is there a place to find out the going rate for consultant's fees?
Answer
This topic has been addressed often in this column. In fact questions about setting fees far out numbers any other question. Refer to the early questions that are archived in this column.
Question
I have been in the management consulting business more than the 'training' business for a while. What is the best source for a current, practical training plan template?
Answer
I am not sure what you mean by a “template,” but if you mean a practical design, I recommend two books. ASTD’s Training Design Basics by Saul Carliner and Jossey-Bass’ The Trainer’s Handbook by Karen Lawson. Both are excellent and will help you get back in the training groove again.
Question
I am finishing my first year of a two year masters program in organizational communication at Rutgers University. I would like to arm myself with the skills and knowledge that consultancy firms look for in new hires. The program is highly focused on hands-on experience along with the academic. I am currently working on a general assessment and training development program for a local business. What else can I do to make myself stand out?
Answer
I highly recommend that you volunteer your services to a local consulting firm. You may already be doing that as a practicum for the “hands-on” portion of your degree, but take it a step farther. If you are expected to complete 80 hours, double or even triple your time. You will stand out, but in addition, you will learn sooooooo very much. You may also want to consider becoming fluent in another language. Spanish would be my first choice. Most consultant firms are global and looking for people who can speak other languages.
Question
Rapid Response Instructional Design Model: is there a proven ID model that addresses immediate training needs that arise? I am being tasked to come up with a quick response method for training (it could be learners’ aids, classroom, web, etc.)
Answer
I suggest that you rapidly get a copy of George M. Piskurich’s book, Rapid Instructional Design. Check out Chapter Four first.
