ROI Basics Certificate
The perfect introduction to measuring ROI for your learning investments.
This online program introduces participants to the basics, barriers, and benefits of using the ROI methodology as a tool to evaluate and support workplace learning and performance. Participants will learn the key principles of the Phillips ROI methodology and determine if their organization is ready to implement the process.
Audience
This program is designed for learning and performance practitioners and managers who want to learn the fundamentals of ROI evaluation. The program provides a very high-level introduction to the concept of ROI.
Course Description
How does the course work?
- Online sessions: Live online sessions will be conducted once a week for four weeks. Each session is 90 minutes in length. You'll participate via the WebEx Training Center platform plus a teleconference for audio. Special software is not required. All you need is a standard web browser and a telephone to participate!
- Opportunities for Application: Through interactive group discussion, a readiness assessment, practice exercises, knowledge checks, and a multi-part case study, participants will be given opportunities to apply their new knowledge and skills and share experiences with the program participants
- Discussion Board: A discussion board will be available throughout the program. The instructor will post information and discussion topics. Participants may post questions for the instructor and topics for discussion as well
- Resource Materials: Participants will receive a downloadable participant guide to accompany each week’s session, and a fold-out ROI model job aid and copy of Return on Investment Basics (ASTD Press, 2005) by Patricia Pulliam Phillips and Jack J. Phillips mailed at the conclusion of the workshop.
Note for planning: Participants are asked to complete case study work and application exercises, and participate in discussion board conversations with fellow classmates throughout each of the four weeks. This time commitment, while not extensive, is in addition to each weekly online session.

Week 0 Set the Stage (prework):
• Understand the overall concept of ROI (Myths and Mysteries)
• Identify their concerns with WLP evaluation and ROI
• Recognize their organization’s readiness for ROI.
Week 1 Evaluation Planning:
• Recognize the difference between activity and results-based WLP
• Decide to which level a program should be evaluated
• Understand the need for and process of evaluation planning
• Select a program suitable for ROI.
Week 2 Data Collection:
• Understand issues to consider when selecting data collection instruments
• Identify the most credible sources of data for the situation at hand
• Describe how they would collect data for one of their programs suitable for ROI.
Week 3 Data Analysis: Isolating the Effects of a Program:
• Explain the importance of isolating the effects of the WLP program being evaluated
• Select the best approach to isolation given certain conditions
• Explain three of the techniques available to isolate the effects of a program
• Describe how they would isolate the effects of a program they plan to evaluate using the ROI Methodology.
Week 4 Data Analysis: Calculating the ROI:
• Identify various techniques to convert a measure to money
• Follow the five steps to convert a measure to monetary value
• Identify the costs categories that represent the fully-loaded costs of a program
• Describe how they would convert measures for one of their programs to monetary value
• Develop a fully-loaded cost profile for their WLP programs
• Understand the importance and process of reporting their first ROI study
• Plan next actions.

ROI Basics consists of four online sessions. Participation in all four sessions at their regularly scheduled day and time is mandatory in order to receive a certificate of completion and 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEU).
