ASTD Conference Speaker Orientation
When you submitted your session proposal, we invited you to be a partner with ASTD in delivering the best conference programming possible. Our primary goal is to serve the learner--the ASTD conference participant--and we'll do that by ensuring that conference sessions are learning experiences. The ASTD audience has high expectations for session content and delivery. This site will help you meet, and exceed, those expectations.
Many of you are seasoned speakers, trainers, and facilitators. For you, these resources will be a refresher to support you in developing and delivering your session. Others of you are new to speaking at ASTD and perhaps to facilitating learning experiences. For you, these materials will be invaluable tools to developing and delivering a quality session.
There are three segments.
1) The Speaker Video was filmed at the 2006 International Conference and includes interviews with selected speakers--your colleagues--who are at the top of the profession and have shared their insights on being a good conference speaker. Also included is a series of short clips of conference attendees stating what they look for in a conference speaker and learning experience.
2) The second resource is a short video on Learning Transfer by one of ASTD's conference speakers calling you to action--the action of ensuring that your sessions transfer learning to the participants. Please view this video and incorporate learning transfer methods into your session.
Note that we plan to invite conference learners to share how they are applying their learning from the conference and making a difference in their organizations for a future article in ASTD Links.
3) The third segment is a series of weblinks and PDF worksheets and tip sheets to help you deliver your conference session. These are categorized according to the four key points from the Speaker Video. Keep in mind that these are highlights and ideas. You are expected to use appropriate resources to develop your session.
Your feedback is welcome. Please let us know how this site is helpful and where it could be improved by contacting Linda David, manager of Conference Programming, at ldavid@astd.org.
