Topic 4:

Getting Started In Training/OD

Question: I am working on a masters in HRD, and want to get into training and OD. Where is a good place to start, so that someone will give the opportunity to gain some relevant job experience to go along with my education. Although I do have plenty of job experience, it is not in the field that I am studying, so I am having trouble trying to find a way actually to get into the field. Thank you for your help.

Answer: From your background information, presently you are working for an apprenticeship and training organization (I assume vocational job training) which is related to T&D. Receiving your HR graduate degree will give credibility to your interest and commitment to training and OD. OD is usually a practice for the more senior HRD professional. Most people enter the field as a trainer or in the current vernacular a "learning & performance specialist." How do you define "relevant job experience?" Do you know specifically the type of job you are looking for? Do you have realistic expectations of the position you qualify for?

If you are pursuing your education on-campus (vs. on-line), are you able to do a short-term internship to gain some experience? This type of opportunity should be available through your department or college career center. Or is it possible to propose designing and executing a staff-training project with your present employer? Again, if your coursework is being done on a campus, contact your professors and departmental chair, since they frequently know about opportunities and may be able to make suggestions or set you up with informational interviews. Also check out the college career center's job listings and schedule an appointment with a career counselor to talk about your resume. Your resume may need to be revised highlighting your transferable skills and experience - "rebundling" to create a new professional niche and image marketing you for a future position.

Join the local ASTD Chapter. Many chapters offer career services to members including a job listing. Job openings will often be announced at chapter meetings. This is a good way to network and to introduce yourself as someone making a career change into training and OD. If you have some time, volunteer. Most people are able to do a "one-shot" volunteer assignment such as helping out at the registration table for an event/meeting. This can be a great way to meet people.
