Professional Shift: Benefits & Policies to T&D
Question: I am currently an HR professional managing an HR service center that handles employee inquiries related to benefits and policies. We process all personnel transactions. I have my MSILR and PHR certification. I'm interested in moving in the training and development area. What is the best way to do this?

Answer: It is natural due to changing interests and goals and a desire for new challenges to consider a different focus in the HR field. With your general background and 10 years of experience in HR, you definitely have some transferable skills and knowledge base. However, there are additional activities you need to consider for this to be a successful and easy professional shift:
- You will need to take some courses regarding the technical side of training: presentation/facilitation skills, instructional design, performance assessment, tools, workplace learning, etc. Look at ASTD's competency models LINK to become better aware of the competencies required in T&D. Today's trainers are learning and performance specialists. Link to Information Resources for Continued Professional Learning Activities.
- Think about what the subject matter of your courses/seminars - can you build on your present skills and expertise i.e., team building, communications, management/supervisory, customer service/relations, etc.
- If not a member, join the Metro NYC ASTD Chapter and take advantage of any Career Services they may have for members.
- Your background information indicates you are working in the health care industry. Look for a training position within this area, as you are already familiar with some of the content terminology and activities.
- Consider a small- to medium-size employer where the position calls for someone who can do both benefits and training.
- When updating your resume, you will need to "rebundle" your skills to create a new professional niche for yourself. Consider using the professional services of a career management or resume reviewer consultant.
