Topic 8:

Job Search Strategies in Training/OD

Question: I have been in training and design for 6 years. I received a masters in education and instructional systems design. I am Myers-Briggs certified. I have vast business experience and computer skills. I have been working in organization development for 1.5 years. I am having a problem changing jobs. This position travels too much for me and I want to move to a position with training/design/OD. What can I do to find a position? I am not having much luck when I apply. I feel my resume is laid out well and highlights my skills.

Answer: I think when you ask the question: "What can I do to find a position?" followed by the statement that you are not having much luck when you apply, that what is happening is that you are not being called in for an interview. Although you may believe that you have created a good resume, have you had a resume consultant review it? Sometimes it takes someone with an objective eye and a fresh perspective to see how a resume can be improved to truly reflect an ideal professional image. Or, ask one or two colleagues to look at your resume and give you some feedback.

Think about your job search campaign activities and ask yourself these questions:m I using all possible avenues of learning about job opportunities - from newspaper ads to networking with members of my professional chapters?

  • Do I feel that my interviewing skills are up-to-date?
  • Is my marketing campaign too limiting - that is, do I need to enlarge the geographic scope of my job search?
  • Am I applying for positions that are really a " right fit" for my background and skills?
  • Am I conducting a focused and targeted job search or taking a "gun-shot" approach?
