Topic 4:

Recent Graduate: Work Experience & Advanced Education Options

Question: I am graduating with a BS and am planning to get some work experience in a business related setting, hopefully training and HR. I am also interested in pursuing higher education, at least a Masters, what are some of the degree types that would best prepare me to work in a training and development area? What are the options that are available? Thanks.

Answer:First of all, congratulations on receiving your BS Degree and planning your career in T&D/HR. You are entering the field at a very exciting time - when its horizons, clientele, responsibilities, and place within the business world are expanding. Before applying to graduate school, I would suggest that you obtain some work experience, ideally in an HR Department as you indicated in your submission.

First of all, many graduate business schools prefer that candidates seeking admission have some work experience under their belt. In addition, it will allow you to explore the training & development field and find out where your interests are and in what area you would like to specialize. Once you have settled into your new position, talk to various people in the HR Department and find out about their jobs, responsibilities, and academic backgrounds.. Join the local ASTD chapter and attend their meetings for further exposure to the field and to network.

It is important to select a graduate program that is right for you and your needs and interests.
