Topic 8:

Transition: From Banking to Corporate Training

Question: This may seen like a strange transition. However, for six years at the Export - Import Bank (a U.S. government agency that finances U.S. exports) I trained exporters and bankers on Ex-Import Bank programs. I also spoke on economics of other countries and general international trade issues. I have a BA in European History and an MA in International Relations. I LOVE teaching people and public speaking. How do I go about transitioning into the training field? Where do I locate jobs? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I feel as if I am gifted in teaching and speaking and would like to use my talents.

Answer: Your desire to transition from banking to training is not an odd one at all. I have received inquiries from a number of people who want to make a change from focusing on financial/business areas to training. The first step you need to take is to find your own special professional niche. Although it should not be necessary to undertake a second master's degree, you will need some additional specialized education or training courses. It would be helpful to your credibility and confidence in yourself when actively seeking training/speaking engagements that you have some preparation in the fundamentals, e.g. adult learning, instructional design, delivery techniques. Basic questions to ask yourself are:
· What subject matters do I want to specialize in as a trainer?
· What type of speaker do I want to be, motivational, topical, and where do I want to speak, e.g. conferences, business seminars, or organizations?
· What type of advanced education or training offerings will best suit my interests, needs, and present professional and personal life style?

You have a number of options from certificate programs, seminars/workshops sponsored by training vendors and professional organizations, and long-distance/e-learning options. Consider a trainer's position in a financial/international organization given your background.

If possible, talk with any HR specialist that may be a member of your local banking professional chapter. Join the local ASTD chapter that will provide another avenue for professional development and networking, particularly with trainers associated with banking/financial/international organizations. Consider attending the annual ASTD International Conference in New Orleans, June 2 - 6, to learn about the latest techniques/methodology, trends, and issues, participate in the conference's Career Fair, and network through the Financial Services Forum. Scan the ASTD's Job Bank and become familiar with the requirements of job openings and better aware of your interests.
