Topic 5:
Planning to move into freelance design
Question: I am currently working as a performance consultant for IBM Microelectronics Division. I have started a master's program in ISD for online learning. I expect to complete my degree in April 2003. I'm tempted to move into freelance design. What resources might I use to develop a business model and get my courage up?

Answer: A number of resources exist to help someone start their own business and freelance:
1. Look in the Yellow Pages for the nearest office of the local SCORE Office (Senior Core of Executives): www.score.org. They can provide retired business volunteers to help you develop a business plan and act as a mentor.
2. Review www.workingsolo.com for information and resources for setting up a home-based business.
3. For general freelance trainer/design/consultant web-based resources:
Freelance.com
Freeagent.com
Guru.com
Onvia.com
4. Contact the US Small Business Administration Agency for general information and publications.
5. If not too far away, attend the meetings of a local Chamber of Commerce and any professional/businesswoman's networking group.
6. If possible, join a local ASTD or ISPI chapter and network at the meetings. You should be able to connect with other T&D/HRD consultants.
It is a very scary to consider going out on your own and risking that you will make it. However, it can also be a very exhilarating and exciting experience with a wonderful feeling of being in control of your work and career.
