Implementing Workplace Learning Systems: An Innovative Case History

This case study examines the implementation of a Workplace Learning System at the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group. The strategy was to shift away from centralized classroom training to self-paced learning at the work site by using various training techniques. Pilot projects focused on engineering, manufacturing, customer service, and human resources. Implementation would result in significant net savings in training time, improved quality of learning, and improved training for specific job requirements and individual needs. This chapter describes and lists the key features of the Workplace Learning System, summarizes the principles and concepts of the system, and lists the responsibilities of the key people involved in the intervention process. In addition, two examples are given of applying the Workplace Learning System at Boeing from the initial concept design through the results.
