ASTD has a new chair, chair-elect, and four new members on its 2011 board of directors. Sam Herring begins his term as chair of the board having served as director and chair-elect. Chris Pirie has been named 2011 chair-elect of the board by the ASTD selection committee. The committee also selected Laurance Alvarado, Anne Schwartz, and Mary Slaughter for three-year terms, and the National Advisors for Chapters selected Christie Ward as its chair, and she will serve on the ASTD board for a two year term, 2011-2012.
Sam Herring, 2011 chair of the board, is executive vice president of Intrepid Learning Solutions. Sam joined the ASTD board in 2008 as a director. He is a past chair of the ASTD selection committee, and is a past advisory committee member for the ASTD TechKnowledge Conference & Exposition.
At Intrepid Learning Solutions, Sam leads the firm's major client relationships as well as marketing and product management functions. He is recognized as a "Who's Who" training industry thought leader by Training Industry Inc. Sam is a frequent speaker at universities and leading industry conferences and seminars. He is a past director of New Futures, a Seattle-area children and family services agency, and holds a master's degree from Harvard University, and a bachelor's degree from Yale University. In 2008, Sam was recognized as a top young business leader through the Puget Sound Business Journal's "40 Under 40" awards.
The 2011 chair-elect is Chris Pirie, General Manager within Microsoft's Sales, Marketing, and Services Group Readiness (SMSGR) organization. Chris joined the board in 2010 as a director and will serve for two more years, becoming chair in 2012.
As General Manager in Microsoft's SMSGR organization, Chris leads the training and readiness for all Microsoft's sales, marketing, and technical field employees worldwide. He joined Microsoft in September 2004 as Senior Director of Learning Product Development, and subsequently he held global sales and marketing responsibility for Microsoft Learning, Microsoft's customer training business. A native of England, Chris moved to the United States in 1991. He has a degree in Literature and Philosophy from the University of Essex in England.
Laurance Alvarado, Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal Public Sector Services, has over 24 years of operational and consulting leadership experience driving organizational excellence, sustainability, and thought leadership with governments and multinational corporations in more than 20 countries.
Before joining A&M, Laurance was the Co-founder and President of an ethically centered strategy, restructuring, and management consulting service. He also served as a Senior Director for the strategy and business development unit of the international investment and development arm of Dubai Holding.
Laurance holds two bachelor's degrees in business administration from Texas A&M University, a master's degree in management from Troy State University, and has completed executive education at Columbia Business School.
Also joining for a three-year term is Anne M. Schwartz, SPHR, Vice President of Global Leadership Development for UPS. In her role, Anne is responsible for global training and leadership development, training strategy and governance, the analysis and development of learning technologies, and talent management for the enterprise.
During her 24-year UPS career, Anne has held a variety of positions in Small Package Operations and Human Resources, as well as in non-package sectors of the business, both domestically and abroad, including UPS Supply Chain Solutions, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate strategy. She holds the SPHR certification from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and is a member of the Atlanta Human Resources Leadership Forum.
As Chief Learning Officer for SunTrust Banks, Inc., Mary Slaughter has enterprise responsibility for learning and development strategies, supporting technologies, and corporate university operations supporting 28,500 employees and business partners. As part of her talent management role, she drives executive and senior leadership development, focused on the firm's business transformation in the midst of rapidly changing industry and regulatory environments.
Prior to joining SunTrust, Mary was Senior Vice President of Learning and Development at Wachovia supporting 70,000+ employees in multiple business units, as well as the company's call center operations across the U.S., India, and the Philippines. Before entering the financial industry, she spent 24 years in the telecom sector. Mary holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry and psychology, and a master's degree in communications and public relations.
Joining the board for a two-year term and as the 2011-2012 chair of the National Advisors for Chapters is Christie Ward, CSP. A principal for the iMAPCT Institute since 1999, Christie seeks to align communications skills with high-performance, productivity, and effective leadership. She coached the World Champion of Public Speaking in 2000, and was recognized in 2004 by ASTD's Rocky Mountain Chapter for a program that resulted in a 66 percent decrease in union grievances at AT&T in Denver.
Prior to her current role, Christie served as director of training for CareerTrack, Inc., where she coached and managed more than 200 of the best professional trainers around the world. She was also recognized in 2008 and 2009 as the National Speakers Association Colorado member of the year for her work in developing the Colorado Speaker's Academy, an innovative program for emerging speakers that generated revenue for the chapter.
