In 2002, Robert Gates took over as president of Texas A&M University from Ray Bowen. Unlike Bowen and many of the prior Texas A&M presidents, Gates spent a great deal of his career outside of academia—the longest being with the CIA. The fact that an ex-CIA director would be their new president caused some apprehension among the university community because no one expected it.
