Tips for Designing E-Learning to Meet CPE Standards

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

The perception among organizations, including prospective clients, is often that e-learning modules can be developed quickly, easily, and inexpensively with little need for testing or early consultation with subject matter experts (SMEs) and other critical partners.

However, when preparing e-learning for a regulated environment, there are certain challenges. The April 2014 issue of Infoline, "Basics of E-Learning Revisited," offers the following tips when preparing e-learning for continuing professional education (CPE) credits.

  • Ensure that you include the appropriate number of knowledge checks and assessment questions as called for by CPE standards.
  • Work with the CPE sponsor to ensure you have the correct paperwork prepared to submit along with course material.
  • Make sure qualifications of SMEs align with expectations specified by CPE standards.
  • Ensure that course materials are updated and revised to meet current CPE standards.
  • Confirm that you are using the right authoring software that allows for technical requirements, such as searchable glossaries that may be required to make e-learning programs CPE compliant.

These tips were adapted from the April 2014 Infoline, "Basics of E-Learning Revisited." For more information, go to www.astd.org/Infoline.
