Welcome to the Global HRD Featured Guest Speaker Blog Series. The purpose of this series is to introduce the topics and guest speakers from the Global HRD track of the ASTD 2014 International Conference & Exposition. This week’s featured guest speakers are Judith H. Katz and Frederick A. Miller, presenting, “4 Keys to Working Across Borders.” We have asked them to answer the following questions to help our community members gain insight into some of the content they will cover at this year’s conference.

What is the topic of your presentation?

Interactions Without Borders: 4 Keys to Higher Performing Global Teams

Why is this topic important for L&D professionals?

The four keys are simple behaviors that create a common language and standard-work foundation for improving communication. These four keys help to minimize misunderstandings and eliminate waste in interactions, and they build an environment of trust throughout an organization. We will describe each of the behaviors in detail, provide examples of their impacts in workplaces around the world, and show participants how to put them to work to create immediate results in their own organizations.

Through our presentation, we hope to equip this year’s attendees with tools and resources to inspire collaboration, enhance productivity, reduce waste, and accelerate achieving results in organizations.

What will be the top three takeaways from your presentation?

The four behaviors presented in this session work together to transform interactions between people at all levels of organizations, and enhance communication, teamwork, and collaboration. In practice, they have produced documented improvements in quality and productivity, greater workforce engagement, and reduced waste.

Participants will learn how to apply the four behaviors to their organizational context by: 1. Working with global virtual teams.

2. Creating collaboration across departments and divisions.

3. Helping their organizations achieve higher performance and accelerate results.

What is your experience with ASTD or the ASTD International Conference & Exposition?

We have previously featured as guest speakers at the ASTD conferences in 1987, 1989, 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2008; Fred has also presented in 2001 and 2005. Fred also served on the ASTD Board from 1999-2001.

What do you expect to get out of this year’s ASTD 2014 International Conference & Exposition?

We always learn and grow through interacting with ASTD attendees. We expect to be inspired by the presenters and the wealth of knowledge and experience that the ASTD conference, and the participants who attend from around the world, always provide.

What are some suggestions you have for attendees to get the most out of their experience at ASTD 2014?

1. Attend with a “joining” mindset: Make a conscious decision to be open-minded, give the benefit of doubt, and challenge conventional thinking. 2. Lean into discomfort: Meet new people and go to sessions you might not normally choose.

3. Listen as an ally as you engage with others at the conference to learn how they are seeing and experiencing the world.
