Video is the new flipchart. Learning and development professionals are increasingly called on to create video content that extends learning beyond the classroom; as well as to introduce more learning resources into classroom training. This program teaches learning professionals how to use consumer-level equipment to create engaging video that looks professional and reinforces learning. Participants will learn all aspects of shooting professional-looking video, from planning and pre-production, to shooting and recording sound, to editing and deployment. At the end of this program, participants will be able to confidently produce quality video quickly and affordably.

Program Overview

Video offers many advantages to trainers and their organizations that are looking to bring richer learning
resources into the classroom, as well as extend learning to mobile and e-learning platforms. Well-produced didactic video enables learning professionals to offer visual learning content to participants wherever they want it, whenever they need it, and at whatever pace that works for their learning styles. Learning video reduces the time, hassle, and costs associated with attending events to gain knowledge which can be just as easily picked up virtually.

With advances in technology, cameras and editing software are cheaper and easier to use than ever before. However, not all video is created equal. To deliver effective training, didactic video needs to have carefully structured content that is easy to understand, reinforces learning, and looks professional.

This highly practical two-day workshop draws on both media psychology and learning theory. Participants will be taken through a step-by-step planning process for structuring learner-centered didactic video. Participants will learn how to plan a storyboard and write an engaging script. Participants will also learn the video production process, including how to streamline it to turn out video faster; how to use a camera; how to compose shots so they are clear and aesthetically pleasing; editing basics; and how to cut video together so it both reinforces learning and looks professional.

In this hands-on and interactive workshop, based on ASTD’s bestselling book, Rapid Video Development for Trainers by Jonathan Halls, participants will have the opportunity to create actual learning videos using the camera provided in the program.

Format and Technical Requirements

This is a two-day face-to-face learning event in which participants bring their laptops. ASTD will provide a lightweight digital camera, tripod, and microphone for you to use in small groups. To learn more about the format and equipment requirements for this workshop, click here

Note: ASTD also offers the Multimedia for Learning Professionals Certificate. While that program has a section dedicated to video, it provides a detailed overview of multimedia and is designed for learning professionals integrating audio, video, and text. The Rapid Video Development for Learning Certificate covers the topic of video on a much deeper level for learning professionals who want to focus their skills only on video, including storyboarding and production planning processes, shot selection, graphics, editing, sound and audio, and compression.

In addition, the Multimedia for Learning Certificate uses basic point-and-shoot flip-style cameras that they take home with them. In the Rapid Video Development for Learning Certificate, participants will use more advanced cameras owned by and returned to ASTD; giving them the opportunity to learn how to use the manual functions as well as a tripod and external microphone.
