Program Overview

Do you, or your employees, work outside of a traditional office? That might mean working from home on occasional mornings or being completely based at your local coffee shop. Perhaps you supervise sales staff in a large geographic area or are responsible for a team of global technology professionals. Mobile workforces are a growing and permanent trend and management strategies need to keep pace.

This course will provide the basics of managing your mobile workforce—from supervisory tools to leadership techniques. In The Nuts and Bolts of Virtual Supervision session you will learn how to align job descriptions to virtual positions, how to lead meetings in the cloud and how to share documents with your remote employees. In the Put a Ring On It session, we will give you tools for engaging your remote team, including building trust and conveying your team culture in the absence of a shared space. Finally, in the Communicating Across the Digital Divide session we will focus on advanced communication strategies such as coaching in a virtual environment and identifying and adapting your leadership style to a remote work team.

In this session we will discuss the building blocks of managing your remote workforce. These foundational tools will help prepare you to lead, not just manage, your team. We will explore:
- Aligning job descriptions with virtual positions. Learn the top five words to include when building a job description for a remote employee.
- Meeting management in the cloud. You will be given a meeting template, which you will personalize, for use in facilitating remote meetings.
- Delegating and monitoring project progress
- Evaluating your remote employee’s performance. Use our simple form to help evaluate project performance and support your annual appraisal.
- Sharing paper virtually. Learn how to use collaborative functions in Microsoft Word and Sharepoint.

Session 2 - Put a Ring on It - Engaging Your Remote Employees

Have you proposed to your remote employees? Virtual employees are more at-risk for disengagement and feelings of mistrust. They need a tangible reminder of your commitment- so, put a ring on it! In this session we will discuss:
- Building trust within your team. Use our virtual team building exercises to build real trust- you will be given instructions for each exercise for use with your own team.
- Reward and Recognition with remote employees. One thing is singularly important when recognizing remote employees- learn what it is and how to do it.
- Developing relationships within your remote workforce. Use our assessment for determining what relationships are most critical to your team’s success.
- Creating (or conveying) your corporate culture virtually. We will create a culture description and share tools for conveying it to your team.
Session 3 - Communicating Across the Digital Divide
Session 3 - Communicating Across the Digital Divide

The final session will focus on advanced communication strategies that will improve the interactions between you and your remote workforce. These strategies will help lessen the distance and improve the outcomes of your virtual team. We will discuss:
- Defining your expectations for using technology- the when, where and how. Use our “communication rules” as a template to create your own set of expectations.
- Challenges to Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). Learn how avoid the three biggest challenges to CMC.
- Coaching in a virtual environment- use our questions to discover what areas of improvement your remote employees need to work on and how to help them.
- Adapting your leadership style to your remote employees. Discover your remote leadership style using our assessment tool and learn what areas you need to address.
