Program Overview

What is HPI? Who invented it? Is it just another fad, or is it something revolutionary? What am I supposed to do about this request for training, when everyone knows it's a resource issue?

If questions like these are running through your mind, the foundations course in ASTD’s industry-recognized Human Performance Improvement Series is for you. This cognitive survey class will answer all of these questions and more. In this highly-interactive workshop you’ll learn the three primary principles that underlie HPI. You’ll also be guided to understand how contributors from such disciplines as behaviorism, management sciences, organization development, and systems theory have created a systematic approach to solving organizational problems. See how the HPI model unites these principles under a common process, and jump-start the move to a performance improvement mindset today.

The HPI process helps your clients to articulate their business goals, link these goals to human performance, diagnose the current state of performance in the organization, and think about how to identify root causes for performance deficiencies and consider solutions. During the program, you will also experience what it feels like to do performance consulting, what it takes to manage the change that accompanies solutions, and whether you have the core skills it takes to be a performance consultant.

Note: Introducing Human Performance Improvement is the first prerequisite to earn the ASTD HPI Certificate. Learn more about the three-course ASTD Human Performance Improvement Series.

Selecting and Implementing Performance Improvement Solutions Certificate

Once you have uncovered performance issues, it is important to find the right solution—an HPI approach can be a Pandora's Box. Research tells us that more than 80 percent of the time performance gaps are not caused by a lack of skill or knowledge within the performer, meaning we must think beyond training as the go-to solution. This workshop provides relevant and timely tools to manage solution selection and implementation. You’ll learn to link root causes of performance gaps to one of six categories: knowledge, information, physical resources, structure and process, motives, and wellness. Using a performance consulting approach you’ll uncover the steps to define, design, develop, and implement the appropriate solution. HPI 1: Introducing Human Performance Improvement and HPI 2: Analyzing Human Performance are prerequisites for this third workshop.
