Program Overview

HTML5 is fast becoming the standard for e-learning delivery. It allows for much easier delivery to mobile devices (and other platforms that don’t support Adobe Flash), more precise formatting, and a more user-friendly, interactive experience.

Do you have a complete understanding of HTML5? Do you know how to fully leverage this technology in your own e-learning programs? Do you know how the tools you’re currently using will adapt to it?
This interactive online workshop is your chance to learn about HTML5 and discover how you can use it in e-learning design. Start building for HTML5 delivery today!

Learning Objectives

By the end of this program, you will be able to:

  • Learn the basics of HTML5 and how it affects your programs.
  • Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of HTML5 delivery.
  • Build e-learning programs in Adobe Captivate or Articulate Storyline and publish to HTML5.
  • Test your e-learning programs on mobile devices.

Topics

Session 1: What Is HTML5?
HTML5 is taking the online world by storm, and e-learning developers are concerned about having to learn a new technology. There’s no question that mobile devices have pushed the need for HTML5 to the forefront because any e-learning content delivered through tablets and smartphones must be HTML5-ready. Even most desktop browsers are going to be standardizing on HTML5 in the near future. Topics covered in session 1 include:
  • Why is HTML5 important?
  • What is the current status of the HTML5 Spec?
  • How are HTML5 and mobile delivery related?
  • What are the strengths of HTML5?
  • What are the weaknesses of HTML5?
  • How can I ensure that I'm HTML5-ready?

Session 2: The HTML5 Spec and Examples
This session explains the technical side of HTML5 (while managing to avoid technical jargon) as it relates to e-learning designers. You’ll be introduced to examples that demonstrate both the strengths and weaknesses of HTML5, and important facts to consider when you’re creating e-learning designed to run in HTML5. Topics covered in Session 2 include:

  • A look at HTML5 Code
  • How is HTML5 different from prior versions?
  • Important new tags and what they do
  • Examples of HTML5 sites and an overview of how they were built
  • Questions, answers, more examples

Session 3: How Do I Create E-Learning With HTML5?
Now comes the best part. This session will show you how to create e-learning for HTML5 delivery using two top tools: Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline. What do you need to know? What do you need to avoid? What potential problems can raise their ugly heads? Get all the answers here. Topics covered in Session 3 include:

  • an overview of applications that output HTML5
  • using Adobe Captivate to create HTML5-based learning
  • how to avoid pitfalls and embrace the strengths of Captivate’s HTML5 capabilities
  • updating legacy courseware created in Captivate to output to HTML5
  • using Articulate Storyline to create HTML5-based learning
  • how to avoid pitfalls and embrace the strengths of Storyline's HTML5 capabilities.

Please note: Participants will not need to have the Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline software. The facilitator will demonstrate the tools.

Who Should Attend

Although this workshop is geared to the beginner, all participants should be familiar with e-learning design and development practices. Participants should be interested in understanding the impact HTML5 will have on their work.

What Participants Are Saying

Here's how our programs drive results.
  • Marianne Smith

"The ASTD program I attended showed me that online learning can go way beyond simple information distribution. The case studies were directly applicable to my job and industry, and provided examples of when things go right and when they don't. A class bulletin board provided a forum for learners to post homework and real life issues, and to get feedback from other learners and the instructor. I will definitely take another ASTD online program in the future."
