Program Overview

Developed for participants new to instructional design, this is the complete workshop for designing outcome-based training, giving participants a competitive advantage when creating programs.

The workshop follows a human performance improvement approach to instructional design and includes practice in performance analysis, needs assessment, job/task analysis, and course design using templates exclusive to ASTD. The content is based on the key actions and knowledge defined by the ASTD Competency Model for designing learning.  You willleave knowing how to design a complete program including participant guides, instructor guides, and other materials that directly correlate to the organization's business goals. In addition, you will apply what you learn during the program, concluding with designing a training program based on a case study presented throughout the workshop.

Designed by Ruth Clark and Ann Kwinn of CLARK Training and Consulting, the ASTD Designing Learning Certificate provides you with all the tools necessary to develop powerful, bottom-line focused training.

ASTD Certificate Programs are learning events and a certificate is awarded to participants upon successful completion of the program. No test is given and participants are not certified. Certification is a testing event that confirms that skills, knowledge, or competencies have been acquired. Please click here for more information on the ASTD Certification Institute’s credential, the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance™ (CPLP™).

What Participants Are Saying

Here's how our programs drive results.
  • Britt McDonnell

"This program teaches the theory of adult learning and curriculum development, but in a practical, hands-on way. The theory is presented simply and in a unified way—and with tools that help me apply ideas to real-life situations. ASTD has by far the broadest and deepest resources available to professionals in training and development.

I find that I keep thinking about the examples that were used during training and what I still need to learn to make similar projects in my company work as well. The processes and tools that were discussed have been and will continue to be helpful."

"One of my favorite takeaways was learning how the phases of the ADDIE process work together in designing effective training. Almost anyone in the learning and development field could write a training module if they had to. However, only those who are skilled in utilizing instructional design methods are able to design effective training that truly closes performance gaps. I chose ASTD because in my opinion, it is the only organization that offers courses that truly meet the educational needs of today's learning and development professional."

"The program delivered content for both the seasoned professional and the newest professional in instructional design. I learned some new concepts, networked with peers, and gained confidence for my upcoming interview. Because I am unemployed it was a very tough decision to spend money on training. I feel like the money was well spent!"

"The Designing Learning Certificate Program and participant guide is immediately relevant to my job. Today is my first day back in my job after completing training, and I have referenced various sections from the handbook almost hourly. It is incredibly useful because it's laid out in a logical format, the language is simple, and it's easy to search for information in it. This program gave me an entire foundation for developing training programs. I have a firmer grasp on how to design effective training, and I'm comfortable with the process for developing new content even though I'm not an SME. I feel like I now have the tools to overhaul my current project and write an effective training program for my students."
