In today’s federal environment of cutting costs, doing more with less, loss of expertise through retirements, and lack of time to attend multi-day training classes, it has become paramount for managers, team leaders, and seasoned co-workers to train “in place.” The most powerful technique for this is coaching. Anyone in a workplace can be a coach. Using a set of focused coaching skills can increase learning on the job through daily conversations and meetings, twenty-minute check-ups, team sharing, webinars, portfolio management, and dozens of other learning avenues. It has been proven that such learning leads to increased transfer and bottom-line results. This course demonstrates how the regular use of a coaching model and supporting language techniques can lead to measurable development on the job.

Program Overview

Research shows that the most successful government managers and leaders utilize a coaching style when interacting with individuals and groups. It has also been shown that the application of coaching techniques in everyday work and meetings promotes engagement and lasting learning. This course shares a coaching model and tools that lead to immediate on-the-job improvements. In session one, the concepts of coaching, language of coaching, and a coaching model are reviewed. The session then continues with the application of framing powerful questions. Session two moves into the practice of advocacy—offering ideas and inviting others into the process. Session three builds on the other skills by covering the technique of identifying supporting actions. Throughout the program, participants practice the tools using real government examples and situations, and they leave the program with a coaching approach to foster learning on the job.
