This program introduces participants to the essentials of how the adult brain absorbs information. You will have the ability to recognize why certain training techniques make learning stick, and others don’t.  You will also be able to design and deliver training that is more brain-friendly, and describe how cognitive neuroscience provides a basis for making learning that lasts.

Program Overview

In this program, participants will learn about four areas that neuroscience has discovered as important to making learning last.  The course will provide an introduction to the research findings that are relevant.   These include:

  1. lessons about the role of attention in learning and what influences attention;
  2. the effects of positive and negative emotion and differing emotional intensity;
  3. the consequences of a rich, participant-generated web of associations to learning content; and
  4. the surprisingly beneficial results of creating space between repetitions of the content.

This program practices the principles discussed and will give participants a chance to apply these lessons to their own work and interests. Ultimately, participants will be encouraged to challenge their unchecked assumptions about how learning design and delivery are best accomplished. Sometimes well-intentioned plans and content leave out some of the methods that neuroscience shows as important to make learning stick. Sometimes learning can be effective without lots of add-ins or costly meetings, even if they might add to the experience in some ways. If the four elements are present, the learning should last, regardless of what tools are available to learning designers. This program will cover all of these topics and much more!

Learning Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Design and deliver new learning programs where content sticks and learners have improved recall.
  • Redesign existing programs to increase learning recall.
  • Apply those principles that guide learning to stick.
  • Create opportunities for creative solutions to learning delivery challenges.

Who Should Attend

This program is intended for training and development professionals who want to develop their skills in the area of designing and delivering learning programs. Those likely to benefit most are those who decide between delivery methods. While advanced practitioners will benefit greatly from this program, beginners will also find it accessible and highly valuable.

    Essentials of Adult Learning

    Many of us become trainers without formal preparation for designing or delivering training to adult audiences. The workplace audience in particular presents unique challenges, such as time constraints, mandatory training requirements, and dispersed workforces. With a good grounding in what works for the adult-workplace learner, we can overcome what seems challenging and capitalize on the diversity of learning approaches in the 21st century.
