This program demonstrates the techniques vital to creating successful e-learning programs and will provide participants with skills to use advanced design techniques to create e-learning programs that drive productivity. Participants will learn effective ways to design learning events that go far beyond the transmission of information to achieve behavior change and targeted performance levels.

A laptop computer (or other device that is able to play Adobe Flash files) is required for the purpose of reviewing demonstration e-learning examples and participating in interactive learning activities. The laptop or device must also have wifi capability, and the latest version of Adobe Flash Player must be downloaded on your laptop or other device and brought with you to the workshop. Please do not bring iOS devices (iPhones, iPads, Tablets, etc.), as the program materials will not function properly on these devices. There will be no computers available on-site for participants. It may be helpful to bring headphones or earbuds with you to the program for audio purposes, though these items are not required.

Program Overview

In some ways, instructional design missed the boat. Powerful authoring tools coupled with the Internet and low cost, media-capable computers and mobile devices expanded the sea of instructional possibilities dramatically and did so almost in an instant. Experienced instructional designers now find guidance lacking in classical literature and design principles, while inexperienced designers are drowning in alluring capabilities.

Advanced E-Learning Instructional Design applies the science of behavior change while redirecting and narrowing the focus of instructional design to those things that matter most in creating successful e-learning applications. Participants will find not only effective ways to design meaningful, memorable, and motivational experiences, but also a blending of successful behavioral change principles. Based on dozens of research studies, these principles will help you design learning events that go far beyond the transmission of information to achieve behavioral change and targeted performance levels.

The content of the workshop is based on the second book in Michael Allen’s e-learning library—Designing Successful E-Learning: Forget What You Know About Instructional Design and Do Something Interesting.

ASTD Certificate Programs are learning events and a certificate is awarded to participants upon successful completion of the program. No test is given and participants are not certified. Certification is a testing event that confirms that skills, knowledge, or competencies have been acquired. Please click here for more information on the ASTD Certification Institute’s credential, the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance™ (CPLP™).

Learning Objectives

After the program, participants will be able to:

"This course helps instructional designers streamline their e-learning  design process. It also gives us that “extra kick” that we sometimes need to remind us of the things we should be doing. I especially recommend this course to seasoned instructional designers because it helps to “jump start” your creative juices and opening up minds to more possibilities of how to make your e-learning more effective."

    Designing Synchronous Learning Certificate

Organizations today are increasingly using virtual classroom platforms like WebEx, Adobe Connect, and others to convey information and build skills quickly, cost-effectively, and just-in-time, as learners need to know and apply the material. Virtual classroom platforms commonly feature tools such as chat, whiteboards, application sharing, and breakout rooms. Sure, these tools seem cool, but what is the best way to use them from an instructional perspective? This online certificate program enables participants to create learner-centric collaborative exercises using these synchronous tools and design instructional materials to support their online learning programs. Throughout the program, best practice tips for online training design that leads to maximum learning transfer will be explained, modeled, and reinforced.
