This program teaches participants how to design and develop learning activities and refresh their existing work. Participants are given the opportunity to practice designing activities using real-time projects and exercises, including role plays, case studies, collaborative learning, stories, and games.

Program Overview

ASTD's Advanced Designing Learning Certificate Program is a workshop with a deep focus on designing and developing tools and techniques that promote a richer level of learning. In the workshop, participants will use a project they are currently working on. This program provides:

  • In-depth instruction on how to design and implement various active learning activities including, but not limited to, role plays, case studies, games, stories, collaborative learning, and other complex, high level activities.
  • Opportunities to practice and apply principles of designing learning activities using a current project from your organization.
  • Methods and tools for accelerating and simplifying designing learning.
  • Activities on how to effectively design non-learning solutions.
  • How to design feedback sessions and other means to help effectively engage with subject matter experts.

ASTD Certificate Programs are learning events and a certificate is awarded to participants upon successful completion of the program. No test is given and participants are not certified. Certification is a testing event that confirms that skills, knowledge, or competencies have been acquired. Learning Objectives

After the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between near and far transfer tasks and identify training methods that lead to deep learning
  • Articulate the benefits of the need for learner-centered training
  • Design a case study that includes all major elements of best practice case studies using a project from your organization
  • Design a role play that includes all major elements of best practice role plays using a project from your organization
  • Identify training requirements that benefit from project work and create projects based on your own work environment
  • Design collaborative learning techniques including structured argumentation that follow best practices and apply to a project from your organization
  • Apply rapid ISD techniques that could be used to develop training
  • Understand the best use of multiple performance support techniques that support far transfer work performance after training
  • Design games and game features that best support diverse training goals and events.

Who Should Attend

Participants should already have experience in designing learning and have attended at least one basics of instructional design workshop. This course is for individuals that want to improve their competency in designing and developing complex learning activities.

This program has been pre-approved for 14 (General) recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR, and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.

Attendance Policy

Participation in all originally scheduled days of the program is mandatory in order to receive the certificate of completion and 1.4 CEUs. Participants who miss more than two hours of the entire program will not be eligible to receive the certificate. Participants who fulfill the attendance requirement will receive a certificate at the end of the program.
