Experience is the best teacher. Unfortunately, organizations have neither the time nor the budget to allow their people to learn through the school of hard knocks.

Simple and cost-effective computer-based experience design and simulations, (a.k.a. story-telling with little to no technology) offer a valuable solution. This approach provides organizations with an opportunity to capture the necessary experience their employees need in a cost-effective and time-saving format, while also giving employees the opportunity to gain experience in a safe environment without the bruising.

This interactive online workshop introduces you to a simple framework for simulations, which combine one’s work experience and expertise with the power of storytelling. Simulation isn’t a science; it’s just a way of organizing your thinking. This workshop will help participants to organize them to train others.

By the end of this workshop, you will have written a simulation narrative for your audience that enables them to identify key decision points and learn through simulated experiences.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this program, you will be able to:

Understand what experience design is and how it can be used to complement more traditional instructional-design methodologies
Understand how to create simulation narratives with low-tech, cost effective means
Write a simulation narrative for a meaningful experience that exposes participants to key decision points
Determine when to use simulations to support your overall learning objectives
Ensure that the simulation experience “sticks” to support learner retention and application even though it is “simulated.”

Participants may transfer their registration to another seminar free of charge. The transfer request must be received in writing five (5) business days prior to the first day of the seminar for which you were originally scheduled. A $50 transfer charge will be applied to all transfers received less than five (5) days prior to the first day of the session. Participant substitutions may be made at any time with written notification to ASTD. If the substitute participant is not an ASTD member and the original participant was, the difference between the member and nonmember rate will be billed.

If cancellation should be necessary, written or email notification to ASTD is required five (5) business days prior to the first day of the seminar. You may receive a full refund, minus a $100 administrative fee, up to and including the 5th business day before the seminar. If you find that you cannot attend, and it is less than five (5) business days before the start of the seminar, you may send a replacement, with written notice to ASTD. If you are unable to send a replacement, you forfeit your registration fee. All credits must be used within 1 year from the date of issuance.

On-Site Offerings

ASTD can make arrangements for this program to be offered on-site at your organization. Your attendees participate in the same learning experience offered at our public workshops, but have the convenience of being at your site and the benefit of covering the material with company peers.

Facilitators

Ken Spero

Ken Spero, Executive Director of the new Immersive Learning University (ILU) at NexLearn, LLC, has been designing, developing and delivering simulations both on-line and in the classroom for over 20 years. He is establishing the ILU as a primary source of education for the public on simulations and experiential learning with the objectives of making the creation and use of Immersive Learning Simulations more available to the masses on a restricted budget. A faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania’s Work-Based Learning Leadership Graduate program, Ken is also a frequent presenter at learning conferences.
