Developing Case Studies

The case study is one of the most challenging methods to design and develop for any learning program.

Although difficult to create, case studies yield many benefits, including:

a realistic work context
increased participant motivation
a learner-centered method
participant engagement in critical thinking skills
a collaborative approach in the learning environment.

Because case studies require ample time to develop and teach, it is essential to determine if and when these are the right approach.

The Essentials of Developing Case Studies online workshop will provide a step-by-step approach to guide you in designing and developing custom case studies for their learning programs. As a part of the program, you’ll have an opportunity to write a case study example and share it in the final session to gain feedback.

Audience

This workshop is best for trainers, instructional designers, and other learning professionals who have at least one year of experience developing training programs.

About this Program

Session 1: What is a Case Study: Fundamentals of the Method

In this session, the fundamentals of the case study method will be discussed, including the following topics:

the definition of a case study
benefits of the case study method
when to use a case study versus another learning method.

Session 2: A Step-by-Step Approach to Building Case Studies

In this session, a step-by-step approach to building effective case studies to use in your learning programs will be demonstrated, including the following topics:

five steps to building effective case studies
- create case study objectives
- design case study content
- plan/organize the case study
- develop the case study materials
- test/revise the case study materials

Session 3: Creating a Case Study to Implement in a Learning Program

During this session the facilitator will share examples of case studies and how they relate to content areas of a learning program. You’ll be encouraged to share examples of case studies used in their organizations’ programs and how they relate to the content being covered. The final session includes:

two examples of case studies and how they apply to specific training content
breakout sessions for you to share your own case studies with fellow participants
an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback to fellow participants.

By the end of this program, you will be able to:

define the term “case study”
identify the benefits for using a case study method versus other methods, such as stories or role plays
identify when a case study is a good fit for the learning content
create a case study by following a step-by-step approach to design and development
write a simplified case study format (1-2 pages)
apply the following takeaways to your own learning programs:
- a job aid to help determine when and where to use the case study method in your learning programs
- a job aid that provides a step-by-step approach for designing and developing case studies
- a template for a simplified case study format.

Participants may transfer their registration to another seminar free of charge. The transfer request must be received in writing five (5) business days prior to the first day of the seminar for which you were originally scheduled. A $50 transfer charge will be applied to all transfers received less than five (5) days prior to the first day of the session. Participant substitutions may be made at any time with written notification to ASTD. If the substitute participant is not an ASTD member and the original participant was, the difference between the member and nonmember rate will be billed.

If cancellation should be necessary, written or email notification to ASTD is required five (5) business days prior to the first day of the seminar. You may receive a full refund, minus a $100 administrative fee, up to and including the 5th business day before the seminar. If you find that you cannot attend, and it is less than five (5) business days before the start of the seminar, you may send a replacement, with written notice to ASTD. If you are unable to send a replacement, you forfeit your registration fee. All credits must be used within 1 year from the date of issuance.

On-Site Offerings

ASTD can make arrangements for this program to be offered on-site at your organization. Your attendees participate in the same learning experience offered at our public workshops, but have the convenience of being at your site and the benefit of covering the material with company peers.

Facilitators

Barbara Greenstein

Barbara Greenstein, principal of Human Resource Prescriptions, is a performance improvement specialist providing proven and creative ways to improve human performance in the workplace. By identifying issues and opportunities for improvement, she helps organizations large and small meet their planned goals.

Barbara is highly regarded for her facilitation and instructional design skills. With over 20 years of experience in the training and development field, her mission is to help clients put the systems in place that will help them manage effectively in today's changing business environment while ensuring optimal performance and job satisfaction for all employees.

Prior to becoming an external consultant, Barbara's corporate experience included training and instructional design for Burger King Corporation, Pizza Hut, and Electronic Data Systems (EDS). She completed her undergraduate work in consumer affairs and management at Florida International University and received a master's degree in human resource development, as well as graduate certificates in instructional design and total quality management (TQM) from Marymount University.

Barbara is an adjunct professor for the master's program in human resources at Chapman University in San Diego. She has also served as a facilitator for the University of San Diego's master's program in executive leadership program. In addition, she is a Certified Performance Technologist (CPT), a certification awarded through the International Society of Performance Improvement (ISPI) and the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD). Barbara is past president of the San Diego chapter of ASTD and an active member of ISPI.
