If you are a federal learning professional, you know what it’s like to face reduced and uncertain budgets. You know that traditional instructor-led training has become too costly to use for every learning need in your organization.

This new 1-day program helps you explore alternative methods of training. This includes informal learning, coaching, group and dyadic learning, social learning, and more. You’ll learn how to match each method with individual, team, and agency objectives. You’ll take a look at the 6 success factors for an effective learning strategy found as a result of intensive government case studies.

Even if you use many of these alternative training methods already, this program offers value-added application and new ways to use the methods both creatively and economically.

About this Program

As a learning professional in the federal government, you’re facing multiple challenges. You’re operating on an uncertain budget and a reduced staff. Your agency’s workforce is spread over multiple generations, which drives the need to increase information-sharing. Your team’s job roles are becoming more complex, and require new skills and knowledge. And you still need to deliver learning.

Based on extensive interviews with SES-level government leaders, this new 1-day program gives you solutions for these challenges. It provides ways to foster learning at the individual, team, and agency levels. Most of all, this program helps you align training methods to maximum results with minimum budget.

This program explores a variety of training techniques. These techniques include group learning (cohorts, panels, learning dyads) and individual learning (just-in-time learning, coaching, journaling). Along with teaching you about these and other techniques, this program will give you an opportunity to discuss which methods make the most sense in your agency. You’ll learn how to pair the right technique with the right learning objective and in the most cost-effective manner.

This program gives you insight into 6 key behaviors for success in devising a learning strategy for your organization. These behaviors consist of seeking out and using learning networks and gurus, mastering systems, delivering straightforward content, and creating engagement.

You’ll leave this program with an action plan for implementing these behaviors and alternative learning techniques, and an overall strategy for how to stretch your budget while still meeting learning objectives.

ASTD Certificate Programs are learning events and a certificate is awarded to participants upon successful completion of the program. No test is given and participants are not certified. Certification is a testing event that confirms that skills, knowledge, or competencies have been acquired. Learning Objectives

Incorporate the 6 success factors that emerged from government case studies into your learning strategy: leveraging a network, mastering the systems, stepping up and delivering, talking straight, seeking out gurus, and creating passionate engagement.
Identify best practice learning strategies and how they can match individual, team, and agency goals. These learning strategies include just-in-time learning, coaching, social networking, cohorts, panels, journaling, developmental assignments and opportunities, reflection sessions, story-telling, dialogue forums, learning dyads, improvisation, and others.
Review concrete examples and develop action plans for how to apply the success factors and learning strategies to various situations.
Develop a results-oriented learning and development strategy that goes beyond traditional classroom training.

Participation in all originally scheduled days of the program is mandatory in order to receive the certificate of completion and 0.07 CEUs. Participants who miss more than two hours of the entire program will not be eligible to receive the certificate. Participants who fulfill the attendance requirement will receive a certificate at the end of the program.

Participants may transfer their registration to another seminar free of charge. The transfer request must be received in writing five (5) business days prior to the first day of the seminar for which you were originally scheduled. A $50 transfer charge will be applied to all transfers received less than five (5) days prior to the first day of the session. Participant substitutions may be made at any time with written notification to ASTD. If the substitute participant is not an ASTD member and the original participant was, the difference between the member and nonmember rate will be billed.

If cancellation should be necessary, written or email notification to ASTD is required five (5) business days prior to the first day of the seminar. You may receive a full refund, minus a $100 administrative fee, up to and including the 5th business day before the seminar. If you find that you cannot attend, and it is less than five (5) business days before the start of the seminar, you may send a replacement, with written notice to ASTD. If you are unable to send a replacement, you forfeit your registration fee. All credits must be used within 1 year from the date of issuance.

On-Site Offerings

ASTD can make arrangements for this program to be offered on-site at your organization. Your attendees participate in the same learning experience offered at our public workshops, but have the convenience of being at your site and the benefit of covering the material with company peers.

Facilitators

Lisa K. Nabors

Lisa Nabors is a partner with Strategic Performance Group and is recognized by the International Coach Federation as a Professional Certified Coach (PCC). Ms. Nabors is a talented speaker and often makes presentations on the topic of coaching to industry and professional groups. She began coaching during her 16 years of experience as a successful, senior-level HR and training and development professional in private industry. Her passion is in optimizing individual, team, and organization performance, and her coaching clients include managers, executives, and teams in organizations such as AOL, AARP, U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Ms. Nabors' coaching expertise includes gathering and feeding back data, helping clients to generate alternatives, identifying key metrics and creating action plans designed to achieve specific, measurable results.

Ms. Nabors is a certified user of all Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) 360-degree feedback instruments, the BarOn EQi and EQ 360, LEI, APT 360 Instruments, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment, and many customized instruments. She is an adjunct faculty member for Marymount University and the George Washington University, and she is the co-author of Leading From the Inside Out: A Coaching Model (Sage, 2002).

Virginia Bianco-Mathis

With over twenty years of experience and a doctoral degree in human resource and organization development, Dr. Bianco is considered a leader in her field. Her background includes a core set of industry positions, extensive consulting with corporate and agency executives, and publications/presentations in the areas of performance management, organizational change, leadership development, executive team building and facilitation, executive coaching, conflict and dialogue, coaching, and strategic planning.

Presently, Dr. Bianco is a professor in the School of Business and department chair of management programs at Marymount University. She teaches courses in organization development, team and group dynamics, human resource strategy, and executive coaching. She is also a partner with the Strategic Performance Group. Her present consulting engagements include leadership development, executive coaching, strategic planning, team building, and organizational change. Presently, she is coaching executives within 10 major organizations across the United States.

Dr. Bianco has given major presentations at several international conferences and has published numerous articles on change, consulting practices, coaching, and performance. Her most recent publications include, "Cross-Functional Teams at AOL" (with Fitzgerald, OD Practitioner, 2002), and Leading From The Inside Out: A Coaching Model (with Roman and Nabors, Sage Publications, Spring, 2002). Her most recent publication/product is Dialogue Cards, 2006.
