ASTD Education works with more than 80 of the world’s best facilitators to deliver our training and professional development programs. ASTD’s facilitators are seasoned practitioners with 10 years or more of experience in their content areas. They draw upon their professional accomplishments and career experiences to deliver personalized learning and valuable insights.

You’ll find that many of our facilitators are published authors or popular speakers in their fields of expertise, and they come from a wide range of industries and sectors. They frequently serve as instructional designers, managers, coaches, human performance improvement professionals, and consultants.

  • Kimberly Devlin

    With her combined passions for effective communication and workplace learning that is relevant, Kimberly Devlin’s focus is always on providing clear, complete, and compelling deliverables. In the training room, that translates to engaging and interactive learning that is purpose-driven, thorough, and direct.  Her focus is on supporting each learner in meeting their specific learning goals, which she achieves, in part, by making the learning enjoyable and immediately relevant and applicable.  

    As a senior professional in Employee and Organizational Development with a Masters Degree from the University of Miami, she was among the first in the industry to attain ASTD’s CPLP certification. Her state-of-the-industry credentials and diverse experience bring real-world examples and stories to the training room.  Kimberly’s experience extends to city, county, and state government agencies across the U.S. as well as working with Fortune 500 firms here and in South America.  She has been a contributor to the ASTD community both locally and nationally for many years, serving on boards, presenting conference sessions at ICE and ALC, and also volunteering her time for ASTD initiatives.     Julie Dirksen is an independent consultant and instructional designer who has more than 15 years’ experience creating highly interactive e-Learning experiences for clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to innovative technology start-ups to major grant-funded research initiatives. Her focus has been on utilizing the disciplines of educational psychology, neuroscience, change management and persuasive technology to promote and support the improvement of peoples’ lives through sustainable long-term learning and behavioral change.

    Ms. Dirksen holds an M.S. degree in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University.  She has also been an adjunct faculty member at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where she taught courses in Project Management, Instructional Design and Cognitive Psychology.

    She’s recently published a book called Design For How People Learn (http://www.designforhowpeoplelearn.com), in which she gets ridiculously excited about everything from learning applications of behavioral economics to the way glucose is regulated in the brain. As Chief Knowledge Officer at Allen Interactions, a nationally recognized company dedicated to creating the world's best custom e-learning applications, Ethan is responsible for internal and external training and communication regarding Allen Interactions' unique perspective on designing and developing meaningful and memorable e-learning programs. While focused primarily on corporate training, Ethan has comprehensive experience with education and government institutions, having worked extensively in libraries and schools as a full-time consultant with the Lincoln Trail Libraries System in Champaign, Illinois. He is also a licensed secondary mathematics teacher. He is the primary instructor for ASTD's Instructional Design for E-Learning certificate course, and has spoken at conferences and private presentations throughout the world.

Ultimately, everything she does is focused on those who matter most: the learners.

    Kathi's unique expertise in transforming the effectiveness of SMEs who lead learning opportunities is frequently sought by national and international organizations in a variety of fields. In demand as an engaging speaker and facilitator, she is a frequent content leader for ASAE and ASTD on topics related to effective learning and working with/coaching subject-matter experts. In addition to facilitating the Training Certificate Program, she developed and leads, several times per year, the three-part webinar Essentials of Coaching SMEs to Facilitate Learning, part of ASTD's ongoing Essentials of.... webinar series.

    As part of her ongoing commitment to effective learning regardless of the setting, Kathi is a qualified lead assessor for the American National Standards Institute's (ANSI) Certificate Accreditation Program. The program is based on ASTM E2659-09, Standard Practice for Certificate Programs, which is an American National Standard.

    Kathi speaks and writes extensively on learning practice and strategies: for clients, in her blog, the Learning Evangelist, and in a volunteer capacity for professional organizations. She is co-editor and a chapter author for the book Core Competencies in Association Professional Development, 2d edition (ASAE, 2011), and contributed 22 of the ideas in the book 199 Ideas for Enhancing Learning Experiences (ASAE, 2011).

    Prior to launching her consulting business in 2003, Kathi spent 25 years working in a variety of capacities for five distinctly different trade and professional associations. For a majority of that time she was responsible for development, implementation, and evaluation of professional development programs.
