Career Development: A Key Engagement Driver Premium Content

Today employees across the board need to be fast, flexible, and fluid in managing their development. You can use a GPS for just about anything these days—except your career. Why? Because work, workplaces, and careers are in a constant state of flux. Maps are great for known destinations. You need apps to create your own destinations.

Headlines and surveys tell organizations worldwide that employees are disengaged, and they see very limited career opportunities where they are, and they feel they have to leave to grow.

More than ever, as organizations move toward recovery, they must maximize the contribution of all employees; one of the best ways to do this is by providing them with skills, pathways for growth and learning, and the resources to increase their opportunities within the organization. Never before has career development been so critical.

Dr. Beverly Kaye is an internationally recognized authority on career issues, and retention & engagement in the workplace. She was named a “Legend” by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD). The designation of Legend is given to “pioneers and prophets in the field of workplace learning and performance.” The criteria that Legends must meet are: enduring impact and influence; originality of ideas; a career of sustained currency; work done more than five years ago is currently discussed, applied, and adapted; a substantive body of published work; and a contribution that raises the visibility, credibility and stature of the field. She has also been named by Leadership Excellence as one of North America 's 100 top thought leaders.

As founder and CEO of Career Systems International, and a best selling author on workplace performance, Dr. Kaye has worked with a host of organizations to establish cutting-edge, award-winning talent development solutions. Her first book, UP IS NOT THE ONLY WAY (Davies Black) became a classic, and although it was published in the early 80's it is still very relevant today. In it she foresaw the effects that leaner, flatter organizations would have on individual careers and the subsequent need for workers to take charge of their own careers. She also developed systems for managers and employees to work together to help employees achieve their developmental goals.
