A 14-member Board of Directors sets the Society's strategic direction and provides leadership to the profession and ASTD’s members worldwide. A staff of 90 serves the membership.

Meet the CEO, Tony Bingham

Tony Bingham

Tony Bingham is a strategic leader who builds and retains high-performing teams and delivers extraordinary results through disciplined and measurable human capital, operational, and technological solutions. As President and CEO of the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD), the world’s largest professional association dedicated to the training and development field, Tony leads a staff of 90 who work with a Board of Directors and world-wide volunteer network to empower professionals to develop knowledge and skills successfully.

Tony is passionate about strategic business, learning, and technology. He is focused on helping ASTD members and learning professionals lead talent management in their organizations, build their business skills, understand the impact of social media on informal learning, close skills gaps, and connect their work to the strategic priorities of business. He is the co-author of The New Social Learning published in August 2010. Through stories and case studies, he and Marcia Conner offer compelling evidence for the training profession on how to transform learning using social media. Tony also co-authored Presenting Learning (2007) with Tony Jeary to help learning professionals persuasively articulate the business case for learning and position themselves as strategic business partners.

In his role as President and CEO of ASTD Tony ensures the association is at the forefront of trends in learning and workforce development and offers programs and services to help members improve individual and organizational performance through learning. ASTD is frequently quoted about these trends and its own research in top-tier business publications such as BusinessWeek, the Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

In 2009, under Tony’s direction, ASTD expanded its reach with the acquisitions of The Bureaucrat, Inc. and its quarterly journal, The Public Manager, and the United Professional Sales Association (UPSA). These affiliations help ASTD to spotlight the value of learning and its impact on achieving results in the public sector and professional sales field. ASTD’s 120 chapters in the United States and 20 international partners provide opportunities for members to convene at the local and regional levels throughout the world.

Tony joined ASTD in 2001 as the Chief Operating Officer / Chief Information Officer. He became President and CEO in February 2004. Before joining ASTD, Tony served as the senior vice president for technology and operations at Britannica.com.
