Public Sector Resources

Workplace learning and performance (WLP) professionals should be familiar with the various public resources available for worker training in the United States. These resources can play an important role in maintaining a competitive edge and can allow for innovative approaches in developing your workforce. WLP professionals should also be familiar with the political process that drives public investment in job training, and be comfortable engaging policy makers on the needs of your organization, industry and community.

Infoline - Use Public Tools for Career Success

This document provides information on two important sources of public assistance: direct financial assistance from the federal and state governments, and the national job training system covered by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998.

The section on direct financial assistance gives details on the ins and outs of the federal grants process, with tips on how to locate appropriate grant programs and how to apply for federal grants. A brief section describes current federal tax incentives that may be used for educational and training purposes. In addition, information is offered on state training incentives, including grant programs and tax credits.

The section on WIA introduces the nationwide system created under this landmark legislation, including information about One Stop Career Centers and Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs). Knowing how to work within this system can be particularly valuable for identifying new employees and providing training for new and incumbent workers.
